impact: Giuseppe Garibaldi was the military commander of the 1,000 volunteers he had assembled known as the "Red-Shirts". They were called that because of their uniform. Due to Garibaldi's strategic planning he was able to take over Sicily and Naples.

Impact: Camillo Cavour was the "negotiator" of the leaders who helped with italian untiy. He had made a secrect deal with Napoleon III. Napoleon to Cavour that if he were to go to war with austria that he would help him win the war. After that Cavour then decided to provoke a war with Austria and won the war with the help from france. Then not soon after Nationalist groups took over Austrian controled states.
